It was bordering on three weeks being jobless when I received a call from Asher.

Up until then, he had been ignoring my calls. I had texted, emailed, and called at all hours. I even drove to his work and stood outside for hours on multiple days, only for him not to show up. I thought that maybe he had been watching me and carefully avoiding me when I was there to ambush him, but when I pulled aside his coworkers, they all told me he really hadn’t shown up.

It was almost worrying. Maybe he had gotten kidnapped, or worse. My mind, of course, went into overdrive as I sat in the parking lot, looking at the clouds and hoping to get a glimpse of him…

But then I remembered that he was the entire reason that I was stuck without a job and having to scrape by.

I had a small cushion of money, but it wouldn’t last me long. Even just before I received the call, I was looking at my mom’s contact information and debating whether or not to call her and ask for help. I was worried that since Asher had broken his promise to not tell my boss, that he may have broken the promise to not tell my overly religious family as well… but if that was the case, my emails and social media would have been blown up a long time ago.

I quickly picked up the shrill ringing phone before I missed his call. All the anger boiled up inside me and I couldn’t wait to rip into him. I was almost giddy because of it.

“You fucking asshole, I’m going to kill you—”

“I have a job for you if you do me a favor,” he said, cutting me off. His voice was just as harsh as it was when he was threatening me in his mother’s home. He had lost the nice guy act completely. His tone was curt and cold as ice. I could hear a bit of noise muffled in the background but I couldn’t make out anything notable.

“Fuck you, Asher,” I said. I was seething, and hearing his cold tone only made me that much angrier. “You’re the reason I lost my job in the first place. I trusted you, and you sent those pictures—”

“Do you want it or not?” he asked, annoyance clear in his tone.

“Why do you think that I would ever take anything you gave me?” I scoffed. “You have already proven to me how much of an asshole you are. I don’t trust you for one moment.”

He let out a heavy sigh and there was a pause between us as he weighed my words. He had taken so long to sit in the silence that I would have thought he had hung up if not for the muffled sounds in the background.

“Where are you?” I asked, breaking the silence. “I tried your work, and no one knew—”

“It’s legit,” he said, his tone softening. “Just a favor and I promise you that I will get you a new job.
